Overview
The beauty of metal-free restorations
Traditional metal-based crowns can leave a tell-tale grey line at the gum and never quite capture the way natural teeth catch the light. Metal-free crowns solve both problems.
Made entirely from advanced ceramics like Zirconia and E-max, these crowns are biocompatible, exceptionally strong and translucent in a way that mimics real enamel. The result blends invisibly with your smile, whether the crown sits on a front tooth or a back molar.
Because they contain no metal, they are also an excellent choice for patients with metal sensitivities and for anyone who wants the most natural-looking restoration available.
We also offer PFM (porcelain fused to metal) crowns, and your dentist will explain honestly which material suits each tooth. For many patients, metal-free ceramics offer the best balance of strength, appearance and comfort. Zirconia and E-max can be used for both front and back teeth. Our zirconia crowns are designed and milled in-house on our own CAD/CAM system, from a digital scan of your teeth, so we are not waiting on an outside laboratory.
Is it right for you?
Who metal-free crowns are for
A crown covers and protects a tooth that is weakened or worn. Metal-free crowns may suit you if any of the following sound familiar. Only an examination can confirm whether a crown is the right choice, and sometimes a simpler filling is enough.
- A large filling that is failingWhen a tooth has more filling than natural structure left, a crown can hold it together and help reduce the risk of the tooth cracking further.
- A tooth after root canal treatmentBack teeth that have had root canal treatment are often more brittle. Your dentist may recommend a crown to protect the tooth for daily chewing.
- A grey line around an old crownIf an older metal-based crown shows a dark margin at the gum, replacing it with a ceramic crown can restore a more natural look.
- Chipped, cracked or worn teethTeeth that are chipped or worn down from grinding can be rebuilt to their natural shape and height with a carefully designed crown.
- Discoloured front teethWhen whitening cannot lift deep staining, an E-max crown can match the colour and translucency of the teeth around it.
- Sensitivity to metalsIf you have a known metal allergy or simply prefer to avoid metal in your mouth, all-ceramic crowns are a biocompatible option.
Treatment options
The advantages at a glance
Here is why many patients choose metal-free crowns over traditional options. Your dentist will help you weigh these benefits for your own teeth.
Natural translucency
Ceramic reflects light like real enamel, so the crown blends in with your surrounding teeth. This matters most on front teeth, where light passes through the edges of natural enamel.
No grey gum line
Without a metal core there is no dark margin at the gum, even years down the line. This is especially helpful if your gums are thin or your smile line is high.
Exceptional strength
Zirconia is one of the strongest dental materials available, standing up to years of heavy chewing. It is often chosen for molars and for patients with a strong bite.
Biocompatible
Metal-free ceramics are gentle on gum tissue and ideal for patients with metal allergies. Healthy gums around a crown also help it look natural over time.
Precise digital fit
Crowns are designed and milled digitally for an accurate, comfortable fit and tight margins. A close fit helps keep the edges clean and reduces the chance of decay underneath.
Long-lasting
With routine care, metal-free crowns retain their strength and appearance for many years. Regular check-ups let us spot any wear or gum changes early, so small problems can be dealt with before they affect the crown.
Step by step
Your crown journey
- 1
Examination and planning
We examine the tooth with intraoral cameras and RVG digital X-rays to check the roots, gums and remaining structure. Your dentist explains whether Zirconia or E-max suits the tooth, and you receive an itemised written estimate.
- 2
Gentle tooth preparation
Under local anaesthesia, the tooth is carefully shaped to make room for the crown, removing only what is needed. Impressions or scans are taken and a temporary crown protects the tooth.
- 3
Shade matching
We match the shade to your neighbouring teeth in natural light. For front teeth, Digital Smile Design can help you preview the shape and proportions before the crown is made.
- 4
Fitting and bonding
At your next visit, the crown is checked for fit, bite and colour before it is bonded in place. Small adjustments are made so it feels comfortable when you chew.
- 5
Review and maintenance
We check your bite and gums at follow-up visits. Routine cleanings help keep the crown and the surrounding gum healthy for the long term.

Aftercare
Caring for your new crown
A ceramic crown cannot decay, but the tooth underneath and the gum around it still can. These simple habits help your crown last.
Brush and clean between teeth
Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes, paying attention to the gum line around the crown.
Expect brief sensitivity
Some sensitivity to hot or cold is common for a few days after fitting. If it persists or worsens, let us know so we can check the tooth.
Avoid using teeth as tools
Do not open packets or bite very hard objects such as ice or bones. Ceramics are strong, but no material is unbreakable.
Protect against grinding
If you clench or grind at night, your dentist may suggest a night guard to protect both your crown and your natural teeth.
Keep up regular check-ups
Routine visits and professional cleanings let us check the edges of the crown and the health of your gums before small issues become bigger ones.
